Minors and young adults from troubled homes are particularly vulnerable to being sex trafficked; it is no surprise that 75% of trafficked children in Tampa are runaway/throwaway teens.
The scope of human trafficking in Tampa Bay is alarming. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, Florida consistently ranks among the top states for reported cases of human trafficking. Last year, there were more than 800 reported cases of human trafficking in Florida, with Tampa Bay being a hotspot for this crime.
The types of trafficking and demographics of victims in Tampa Bay vary. Sex trafficking is the most prevalent form, with victims often being young girls and women. However, labor trafficking and child trafficking also occur in significant numbers. Victims come from diverse backgrounds, including U.S. citizens, immigrants, and even foreign nationals.
